The Story Behind Sweetest Day
Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged, and orphaned, but also friends, relatives, and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Sweetest Day was started more than 70 years ago by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland candy company employee, who wanted to bring happiness and joy into the lives of the city's orphans, shut-ins, and other individuals who were often forgotten and neglected. With the help of friends and neighbors, Mr. Kingston distributed candy and other small gifts to the underprivileged as a token remembrance that somebody cared about them.
